A rather slender perennial with erect, scarcely branched, glabrous stems 25-38 cm high, growing from a stout rootstock.
Ecology UK: (distribution according to flora) rather uncommon plant of grassland and wood margins on basic soils in England, Wales and S. Scotland.

Fleurs : involucre rougeâtre à folioles extérieures ovales-lancéolées ; aigrette roussâtre ; fleurs purpurines.
